• 11 February - District Six, Cape Town is declared a "White Group Area" by the government

March

• 21 March - As a result of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, this day is proclaimed "International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination" by the United Nations General Assembly

• American Senator Robert Kennedy visits South Africa

July

• 18 July - The International Court of Justice judges in favour of South Africa in a case of administration of South West Africa which was brought before them by Ethiopia and Liberia

August

• 26 August - South West Africa People's Organization and the South African Police clash at Omugulu-gwoOmbashe, northern South West Africa during Operation Blue Wildebeest

September

• 13 September - B.J. Vorster succeeds Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd as the 8th Prime Minister of South Africa

• Following increase international pressure for South Africa to relinquish control of South West Africa, the United Nations terminates the mandate given by the League of Nations and that South West Africa will be administrated by the United Nations. This is rejected by South Africa.
